Step 1:
Begin by putting on the pants that need hemming. Stand in front of a full-length mirror to ensure you can accurately assess the length. Fold the hem of each pant leg to the desired length. Use a measuring tape to ensure that the fold is even on both legs. Once you’re satisfied with the length, use straight pins to secure the fold in place. Take care to ensure that the pins are inserted perpendicular to the fabric and that the fold lays flat against the leg. Use fabric chalk or a washable marker to mark the new hemline along the folded edge. Double-check the markings to ensure they are even and symmetrical.

Step 2:
Carefully remove the pants and lay them flat on a clean, flat surface, such as a table or an ironing board. Smooth out any wrinkles or folds in the fabric to ensure an accurate cut. Use fabric scissors to cut along the marked hemline. Take your time and cut carefully to ensure a straight line. Leave an extra 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) of fabric below the cut line. This excess fabric will be folded under and sewn to create the new hem.
Step 3:
Fold the raw edge of the fabric up to meet the marked hemline. Use your fingers to gently press the fold into place, creating a crisp edge. For a more precise fold, you can use an iron to press the fabric. Once the fold is in place, use straight pins to secure it along the entire hemline. Insert the pins horizontally into the fabric, placing them about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) apart. Take care to ensure that the fold lays flat and even all around the pant leg.

Step 4:
Set up your sewing machine with a matching thread color or thread your needle with the desired thread. Starting at the inner seam of the pant leg, begin sewing along the folded hemline. Use a straight stitch or a blind hem stitch for a professional finish. Remove the straight pins as you sew, being careful not to sew over them. Continue sewing all the way around the pant leg until you reach the starting point. If sewing by hand, use small, neat stitches to secure the hem in place. Knot the thread securely at the end.
Step 5:
Once the hem is sewn, it’s time to press it with an iron. This will set the stitches and create a smooth finish. Lay the pants flat on the ironing board with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. Use the iron to press the hem, applying gentle pressure and moving the iron back and forth along the folded edge. Be sure to press from the wrong side of the fabric to avoid leaving any creases or marks on the right side.

Step 6:
Try on the pants to ensure that the hem is the correct length and sits evenly on both legs. If any adjustments are needed, make them before finishing the hem. Trim any loose threads with scissors and give the pants a final press if necessary to ensure a polished finish. Once you’re satisfied with the hem, your pants are ready to wear!
